Digital Pianos: What to Know

Digital pianos are full-size keyboard instruments built for pianists who need authentic playing feel without the footprint or maintenance of an acoustic. These are 88-key instruments with weighted, hammer-action keys that replicate the resistance and response of a real piano. You'll find them in practice rooms, home studios, and teaching spaces where the goal is serious piano study or composition. They include onboard speakers, MIDI connectivity, and often USB audio interfaces. Unlike stage pianos or MIDI controllers, digital pianos prioritize realistic touch and sound out of the box.

What to Look For

Key action is everything. Graded hammer action means heavier keys in the low end, lighter in the high end, just like an acoustic. Look for triple-sensor key detection if you play fast passages or trills. Sound engine matters: sample-based engines with multiple velocity layers sound more natural than basic synthesis. Polyphony count determines how many notes can ring simultaneously before dropout. 128-note polyphony is workable, 256 is better for sustain pedal work and layered sounds. Check connectivity: MIDI over USB for DAW recording, line outputs for external speakers or PA, headphone jacks for silent practice. Onboard speakers should be at least 12W per side if you're not using monitors. Pedal inputs matter too. A half-damper sustain pedal input lets you control resonance like an acoustic sustain pedal.
