Console Cases: What to Know

Console cases protect mixers, DJ controllers, and audio interfaces during transport and storage. They range from soft padded bags for bedroom producers moving gear between sessions to flight cases with reinforced corners for touring DJs and live sound engineers. The right case depends on how often you move your gear, how rough the handling gets, and what format your console is. A 4-channel DJ controller needs different protection than a 32-channel analog mixer. Most cases are built for specific models or size ranges, so fit matters as much as durability.

What to Look For

Start with fit. Measure your console's dimensions and check the case's interior specs. Generic "large controller" cases work for some gear, but model-specific cases from brands like Decksaver or Odyssey offer exact cutouts for knobs, faders, and ports. For soft bags, look for at least 10mm padding and reinforced handles. Hard cases should have metal corners, secure latches, and enough depth to clear any protruding knobs without pressure. If you're flying with gear, ATA-rated flight cases meet airline handling standards. Some cases include cable storage compartments or laptop shelves, which matters if you're running Serato or rekordbox off a separate machine. Ventilation holes are useful if you plan to run your mixer inside the case during gigs. Check the weight: a road-ready case for a Rane Seventy can weigh 30+ pounds empty.
