Antennas & RF: What to Know

Wireless microphone systems fail when RF management is ignored. Antennas, antenna distribution systems, combiners, and RF tools keep your wireless channels clean and reliable in environments with multiple transmitters, competing signals, and physical obstacles. Houses of worship, theaters, corporate AV installs, and touring rigs all need proper antenna infrastructure once you're running more than a couple of wireless mics. A good antenna distribution system lets you run eight or more receivers off a single pair of antennas, reducing clutter and improving signal strength across the board. RF combiners let you split antenna feeds without signal loss. Spectrum analyzers show you what frequencies are actually available in your venue.

What to Look For

Frequency range matters first. UHF systems (470-698 MHz in Canada) require UHF antennas. Match your antenna's frequency response to your wireless system's operating band. Gain is measured in dBi: higher gain means longer range but narrower coverage angle. Omnidirectional antennas (0-3 dBi) work for most installs. Directional paddles (6-10 dBi) are for long throws or problem areas. Active antenna distribution systems include built-in amplifiers to compensate for signal loss across multiple outputs. Passive systems are cheaper but lose 3-6 dB per split. Look for systems with front-panel RF indicators so you can see signal strength at a glance. Combiners need proper impedance matching (50 ohms for most pro wireless). BNC connectors are standard, but some systems use SMA. If you're running Shure, Sennheiser, or Audio-Technica wireless, check compatibility specs. Cascade ports let you link multiple distribution units for larger systems.

Top Brands

Shure and Sennheiser dominate with distribution systems and antennas designed for their wireless ecosystems. RF Venue builds third-party solutions that work across brands, including their Diversity Fin antennas and DISTRO series. Electro-Voice and Audio-Technica offer solid mid-range options.

Clean RF is what separates a wireless system that works from one that drops out mid-performance. Pair your antenna distribution with a spectrum analyzer to map your RF environment before a show. If you're running a multi-mic install, proper antenna infrastructure pays for itself the first time you avoid a dropout. Free shipping on orders over $199 across Canada.
