Description
The Keeley Moon is an op amp fuzz built around the late-1970s IC-based Big Muff circuit, the version with the hard clipping and the huge low end that fed a generation of stoner and doom records. Keeley kept the op amp gain structure and added a wider filter range so the pedal works in a band mix instead of only sounding good alone in a bedroom.
Controls
- Level: Output volume, with enough range to push an amp hard.
- Filter: The classic tone sweep, extended at both ends of its travel.
- Fuzz: Gain, from a thick fuzz-drive to full saturation.
- Filter switch: Three EQ shapes: scooped mids for the classic sound, flat, or full range with the mids left in.
In Use
The flat and full range settings are the reason to pick the Moon over a stock reissue. They keep the guitar audible under a second guitar or a loud bass without losing the wall of low end. It stacks well with an overdrive in front for more sustain and tighter attack.
