Transmitters & Receivers: What to Know

Wireless transmitters and receivers are sold as individual components for replacing lost units, expanding existing systems, or building custom multi-channel rigs. Handheld transmitters work for vocals and interviews. Bodypack transmitters pair with lavalier or headset mics for presentations and theatre. Plug-on transmitters convert any XLR mic into a wireless unit. Receivers decode the RF signal and output audio to your mixer or interface. Most pro systems operate in UHF bands with frequency coordination to avoid interference. Digital systems offer encryption and lower latency than analog. Buying components separately gives you flexibility but requires matching frequency ranges and ensuring transmitter-receiver compatibility within the same product line.

What to Look For

Match frequency ranges between transmitters and receivers. UHF systems (470-952 MHz) offer more channels and better range than 2.4 GHz digital systems, but require frequency coordination in crowded RF environments. Check your local spectrum regulations. Digital transmission reduces latency to under 4ms on modern systems like Shure Axient Digital or Sennheiser EW-DX. Analog systems have zero processing delay but less channel density. For bodypacks, confirm connector type: TA4F for Shure, 3.5mm locking for Sennheiser and Audio-Technica. Plug-on transmitters need phantom power blocking and gain matching for your specific mic. Battery life matters for long events. AA systems are cheaper to run than proprietary rechargeables. Receivers need Dante or analog outputs depending on your mixing setup. Diversity reception with two antennas reduces dropouts.

Top Brands

Shure dominates with ULX-D, QLX-D, and Axient Digital systems known for RF stability. Sennheiser's EW-DX and evolution wireless lines offer strong German engineering. Audio-Technica's 3000 and 5000 series deliver solid performance at competitive pricing. Electro-Voice RE3 systems are reliable workhorses for live sound.
