About Sugar Bytes

Sugar Bytes is a Berlin-based software developer founded in 2003 by Robert Fehse and Rico Baade. The company specializes in creative sequencer-driven effects and instruments built for studio production and live performance. Their tools are known for playful, deliberately simple interfaces that hide complex processing engines underneath. Step-sequenced multi-effects like Effectrix and Turnado have become staples in electronic music production, while instruments like Thesys and Obscurium offer unconventional approaches to synthesis and pattern generation. Fehse studied informatics and worked at Native Instruments before starting the company; Baade came from the Reaktor community under the name Programchild. Their first product, Artillery, introduced MIDI-triggered multi-effects in 2003.

Step-Sequenced Multi-Effects

This is where Sugar Bytes made its name. Effectrix and Turnado let you trigger and sequence effects in real time, turning static processing into performance tools. Effectrix chops incoming audio into steps and applies different effects to each slice. Turnado maps eight effects to a single knob, with a gater and dictator sequencer for rhythmic modulation. Both plugins treat effects as compositional elements rather than post-processing. Artillery2 takes a different approach, mapping effects to MIDI key zones so you can play your processing from a keyboard. These tools work in the studio for sound design and arrangement, but they shine in live sets where you need immediate control over complex effect chains.

Grooveboxes and Drum Machines

DrumComputer and Consequence handle rhythm programming with Sugar Bytes' signature step-sequencer workflow. DrumComputer is a sample-based drum machine with per-step parameter control and built-in effects. Consequence is a bass and lead groovebox that combines synthesis with pattern sequencing. Both use the same visual approach: colorful grids, simple controls, fast results. They're designed for sketching ideas quickly rather than deep sound design sessions. If you need a drum machine or bass sequencer that prioritizes speed and immediacy over endless tweaking, these fit the bill.

Unconventional Synthesizers

Unique, Obscurium, and Egoist take synthesis in directions most softsynths avoid. Unique is a spectral synthesizer that processes 128 frequency bands independently. Obscurium combines granular synthesis with step sequencing for evolving textures. Egoist is a pitch-shifter and harmonizer that doubles as a creative instrument. None of these are your standard subtractive synths. They're built for producers who want sounds that don't come from presets or typical workflows. Thesys is a MIDI step sequencer that generates patterns for external instruments, turning any synth into a Sugar Bytes-style pattern generator.

Creative Effects

Looperator, Guitarist, and WOW2 handle specific processing tasks with the same step-sequencer DNA. Looperator is a multi-effect looper that slices and rearranges loops in real time. Guitarist simulates guitar amp and pedal chains for non-guitar sources. WOW2 is a multi-band filter and distortion plugin with vowel shaping and modulation. Factory is a modular effect system that lets you build custom processing chains from individual modules. All of these plugins share the same design philosophy: make complex processing immediate and playable.
