About Playfair Audio

Playfair Audio is a Hannover-based plugin developer founded in 2022 by electrical engineer Christian Luther. Luther spent over a decade building DSP for Kemper Amps and Sennheiser before launching his own company around a single idea: dynamics processors should speak the language of mixing, not engineering textbooks. His flagship plugin, Dynamic Grading, replaces threshold, ratio, and attack controls with musical descriptors like punch, body, and floor. The company calls this approach Augmented Intelligence, software that learns your source material and translates your intent into DSP without forcing you to dial in technical parameters. Dynamic Grading 2, released as a free update for existing users, refines the concept further with a single Body control and the same Source Learn analysis engine.

Dynamic Grading

Dynamic Grading is a dynamics processor that asks what you want your track to sound like, not how you want to compress it. You feed it audio, hit Source Learn, and the plugin analyzes the material. Then you adjust Punch, Body, and Floor, three controls that describe the character you're after. No threshold hunting. No ratio math. No attack-release dance. The plugin translates your choices into compression, saturation, and transient shaping under the hood. Dynamic Grading 2 simplifies the interface to a single Body control while keeping the same DSP engine. Both versions ship as AU, VST3, and AAX and require an iLok account but no dongle. This is mixing by description, not by numbers.
