About Avid

Avid Technology, Inc. has been shaping professional media production since Bill Warner founded the company in Burlington, Massachusetts in 1987. The prototype Avid/1 Media Composer, built on a Macintosh II, debuted at NAB in April 1988 and pioneered computer-based non-linear editing. Today, Avid is known for two pillars of music production: Pro Tools, the de facto standard DAW for professional recording, post-production, and film sound, and Sibelius, one of the two dominant professional music notation programs. Both are available as perpetual licenses and subscription plans with tiered feature sets.

Pro Tools

Pro Tools remains the industry standard for professional audio production. The software is available in three tiers: Pro Tools Artist for home studios and songwriters, Pro Tools Studio for serious project studios and independent producers, and Pro Tools Ultimate for high-end facilities handling film sound, large-scale mixing, and complex post-production. Each tier offers different track counts, plugin allocations, and advanced features. You can buy perpetual licenses or subscribe with ongoing updates and support. Pro Tools handles everything from tracking and editing to mixing and mastering, with deep hardware integration and collaboration tools that make it essential in professional environments.

Sibelius

Sibelius is a professional music notation application used by composers, arrangers, educators, and publishers. Avid acquired Sibelius Software to add notation to its portfolio, and the program now comes in three versions: Sibelius (First) for students and beginners, Sibelius Artist for working musicians and educators, and Sibelius Ultimate for professional composers and engravers. Ultimate includes advanced layout tools, extended instrument libraries, and support for large scores. Sibelius integrates with PhotoScore & NotateMe and AudioScore, both developed by Neuratron and distributed under the Sibelius banner. PhotoScore scans printed sheet music into editable notation, while AudioScore transcribes audio recordings into MIDI and notation.
