Warm Audio WA-87 R2 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (Black)

The Warm Audio WA-87 R2 (Black) is the black-finish version of the WA-87 R2 large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone. Based on the classic U87-style circuit from the 1960s, the R2 features a custom-wound CineMag USA transformer, NOS Fairchild transistor, and WIMA and Nichicon capacitors in a nickel-plated brass body with a black finish. Three switchable polar patterns, an 80 Hz high-pass filter, and a -10 dB pad provide versatility across vocals, acoustic instruments, and drums. Sonically identical to the nickel version.

The R2 revision improved on the original WA-87 with a redesigned head basket that creates more space around the K87-style capsule (WA-87-B-50V) for a more open and natural response, along with slightly increased output level and improved frequency response from the updated CineMag USA transformer. The characteristic 7-10 kHz presence boost adds clarity and forward detail to vocals and acoustic instruments, while the NOS Fairchild transistor and high-bandwidth film capacitors maintain smooth, controlled character across the entire frequency range.
