Description
The Warm Audio WA-87 R2 is a large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone based on the classic U87-style circuit from the 1960s. The R2 revision features a custom-wound CineMag USA transformer, a NOS Fairchild transistor, and WIMA and Nichicon capacitors housed in a heavier, nickel-plated brass body with a redesigned head basket that adds space around the K87-style capsule. Three switchable polar patterns, an 80 Hz high-pass filter, and a -10 dB pad provide versatility across vocals, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, and any source that benefits from the detailed, present midrange of a vintage 87-style mic.
The R2 revision improves on the original WA-87 with a custom-wound CineMag USA transformer that delivers slightly increased output level and improved frequency response compared to the first version. The redesigned head basket creates more space around the K87-style capsule (WA-87-B-50V), a reproduction of the classic dual-backplate K87 with 6-micron gold-sputtered NOS Mylar diaphragms. This additional space around the capsule provides a more open and natural sonic character.
The signature frequency response of the WA-87 R2 includes a gradual boost in the 7-10 kHz range that adds a present, radio-friendly edge to lead vocals and any source that needs to sit forward in a mix. The NOS Fairchild transistor and high-bandwidth polystyrene and film capacitors from WIMA and Nichicon contribute to the smooth, detailed character throughout the frequency range.
