Description
The Warm Audio WA-84 is a small-diaphragm, transformer-balanced condenser microphone modeled after the classic Neumann KM 84. Its fully discrete Class A circuit uses a CineMag USA transformer, Fairchild FET, and polystyrene and WIMA capacitors to deliver the creamy top end and full low-to-mid response prized in vintage pencil condensers. The replaceable threaded capsule design lets you swap between cardioid and optional omni capsules. A -10 dB pad handles louder sources. The WA-84 excels on acoustic guitars, drum overheads, hi-hats, piano, strings, and brass.
Unlike modern transformerless reissues that update the circuit for lower cost, the WA-84 retains a CineMag USA transformer in the output stage, which contributes to the rich detail, tight bottom end, and smooth high end that distinguish original KM 84 recordings. The frequency response features a slight dip around 8-10 kHz followed by a gradual rise above 11 kHz, which prevents overly harsh cymbals on drum overheads while maintaining brilliance and air on acoustic instruments.
