Description
The Warm Audio Fen-tone is a compact instrument ribbon microphone with a selectable 26 dB JFET in-line preamp. Inspired by a classic 1950s pencil-style ribbon design, the Fen-tone features a custom Japanese ribbon element, a rare-earth neodymium magnet, and a CineMag USA output transformer. The ventilated side-address body fits easily into tight mic positions on guitar cabinets, drum kits, and acoustic instruments.
The 99.1% aluminum ribbon is 1.8 microns thick and suspended by a neodymium magnet that captures rich midrange detail with a smooth roll-off above 15 kHz, eliminating harshness without losing presence. Because the ribbon is centered in the magnetic gap, both sides of the figure-8 pattern produce identical tone, simplifying stereo setups and off-axis rejection. The Fen-tone handles up to 148 dB SPL, making it well suited for close-miking loud sources like guitar cabinets, snare drums, and brass.
Warm Audio's "Warm Lifter" circuit is a discrete 5k ohm high-impedance JFET preamp that adds 26 dB of clean gain when 48V phantom power is engaged. In passive mode (VT), the mic operates at 300 ohm output impedance for a classic ribbon sound; in active mode (+dB), impedance drops to 150 ohm for compatibility with lower-gain interfaces. Do not apply phantom power while in VT mode.
