Description
The Warm Audio WA-CX12 is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone that recreates the natural, balanced tone of the classic AKG C12, produced in Austria from 1953 to 1963. At the front of the signal chain is an edge-terminated, all-brass CK12-style capsule paired with a premium 12AY7 vacuum tube and a custom TAB-Funkenwerk (AMI) USA output transformer. Nine polar patterns, selectable from the external power supply, provide versatility from intimate vocal sessions to spacious room recordings. The WA-CX12 is known for its organic tone, smooth top end, and natural midrange character.
The CK12-style capsule in the WA-CX12 is an all-brass, edge-terminated, dual-backplate design with 6-micron gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragms. Unlike later nylon iterations of this capsule found in some reissues, the all-brass construction faithfully replicates the clear, open top end of the original 1950s capsules. The frequency response profile is mostly flat with a slight dip around 2 kHz and a gradual boost between 5 and 10 kHz, which smooths out harshness while preserving brilliance on vocals, piano, and acoustic instruments.
The 12AY7 vacuum tube complements the capsule with added warmth and clarity, and the AMI transformer delivers the full, natural sound that the original Austrian microphone was known for. Nine polar patterns span cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 with six intermediate positions, providing precise control over room interaction and off-axis rejection.
