Description
The Warm Audio WA-412 is a four-channel microphone preamplifier and DI in a 1U chassis, built in the American console preamp style known for punchy low end and smooth, open treble. Each channel features a discrete, socketed X520 op-amp and custom Altran USA input and output transformers, delivering 65 dB of gain with the headroom and tonal character associated with classic large-format American recording consoles.
Gain Staging and Tone Controls
Each channel provides a stepped input gain control and a stepped output trim knob. The output trim sits after the Altran output transformer, allowing the preamp and transformer stages to be driven into saturation while keeping the level hitting the converter under control. The Tone switch toggles the input transformer impedance from 600 to 150 Ohms: the 600 Ohm position delivers the classic punchy console tone, while 150 Ohms opens up the top end with more air, particularly useful for ribbon microphones and darker dynamic mics. A -20 dB pad handles high-SPL sources paired with sensitive condenser microphones.
Connectivity
Each channel has a rear XLR microphone input and a front-panel 1/4" Hi-Z instrument input with a 2 MOhm impedance JFET stage, routing bass, guitar, and keyboard signals through the full discrete signal path including both Altran transformers and the X520 op-amp. The X520 is socketed and can be replaced with any 6-pin 2520-footprint discrete op-amp for different tonal character.
