Description
The Warm Audio Fen-tone (WA-2FT) is a matched pair of compact instrument ribbon microphones, each with a selectable 26 dB JFET in-line preamp. Inspired by a classic 1950s pencil-style ribbon design, each Fen-tone features a custom Japanese ribbon element, rare-earth neodymium magnets, and a CineMag USA output transformer. The ventilated side-address body fits easily into tight mic positions on guitar cabinets, drum kits, and acoustic instruments.
The 99.1% aluminum ribbon is just 1.8 microns thick, suspended by a powerful neodymium magnet to capture intricate midrange detail with a smooth roll-off above 15 kHz that eliminates harshness without losing presence. Unlike some ribbon designs, the Fen-tone has no "bright" or "dark" side because the ribbon is centered within the magnetic gap, so both sides of the figure-8 pattern deliver consistent tone. This makes stereo techniques like Blumlein pairs and mid-side setups straightforward.
Each microphone includes Warm Audio's "Warm Lifter" circuit, a discrete 5k ohm high-impedance JFET preamp that adds 26 dB of clean gain when 48V phantom power is engaged. In passive mode (VT position), the Fen-tone operates at 300 ohm output impedance for a classic ribbon sound; in active mode (+dB position), impedance drops to 150 ohm, making it compatible with lower-gain audio interfaces without volume or frequency loss. Do not apply phantom power while in VT mode.
