Description
The Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2 is a 12-in/6-out USB audio interface that pairs two Tone Shaping mic preamps with extra line I/O, MIDI and an optical input for expansion. Two front-panel Hi-Z inputs take guitar and bass, two rear line inputs and two line outputs connect keyboards and outboard gear, and the ADAT or S/PDIF input adds up to eight digital channels. It records at up to 32-bit/192 kHz and runs on USB bus power.
Tone Shaping, Smart Display and Auto-Gain
Each preamp has its own Tone setting. Warmth takes its tube character from the UA 610 preamp, Focus brings the tight transients of American solid-state consoles, and Shine adds the open top end of British Class-A desks. The full-color Smart Display shows the selected input with its level and settings, and one encoder handles gain and volume. Auto-Gain sets recording levels in seconds, and Clip Protection catches peaks during the take.
Connections and Software
MIDI In and Out on 3.5 mm TRS jacks connect synths and controllers, and the USB-C hub port powers a MIDI controller or other peripheral. Volt 4 Gen 2 is class compliant on Mac, iPad and iPhone, Windows uses the UA ASIO driver from the UA Connect app, and the UAD Console app and LUNA add session recall and low-latency cue mixes. UA includes LUNA Free and a bundle of UAD plug-ins and instruments, among them the Teletronix LA-2A and UA 1176 compressors and the UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection. UA sets the bundle contents and can change them.
