Description
The Universal Audio SD-3 is a compact cardioid dynamic microphone for snare and tom drums, loud guitar cabinets, brass and woodwinds. It has all-metal construction, a hand-selected capsule and high SPL handling, and its small body fits into tight spots around a drum kit. The SD-3 comes with UA's Hemisphere Mic Collection plug-in, which models five classic instrument mics.
Five Instrument Mics in One
Register the SD-3 in the UA Connect app to get Hemisphere, which works with or without UA hardware. Its five models are DN-4, DN-57, DN-409U, DN-545 and DN-604. Filter, proximity and axis controls let you shape the sound after tracking.
Mounting and Placement
The SD-3 is an end-address mic, so you point the top grille at the source. Its cardioid pattern rejects the most sound directly behind the mic, which helps keep cymbals and hi-hat out of a snare track. The included standmount has a 5/8" to 3/8" adapter fitted, which can be removed for 5/8" stands. The SD-3 is passive and needs no phantom power.
