Description
The Universal Audio Bock 167 is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone designed by David Bock and built by hand at the UA Custom Shop in Santa Cruz, California. It is David Bock's take on the classic U67, with a dual-diaphragm K67-type capsule, a Lundahl output transformer and a new old stock EF732 tube, plus tone controls the vintage mic never had. It suits singers, acoustic instruments, drums and voiceover.
Tone Shaping on the Mic
Three switches on the body shape the sound before it reaches the preamp. The Mode switch picks Normal, a nominally flat response with a slight lift at the top, or Fat, which boosts the low end between 10 Hz and 400 Hz and drops the high lift. The High Frequency switch has four positions: a 3 dB shelving cut at 10 kHz, a 1.5 dB shelving cut at 5 kHz, flat, and a 2 dB shelving boost at 10 kHz. A 10 dB pad is there for drums, guitar amps and other loud sources.
Pattern Control on the Power Supply
The polar pattern is set with a continuously variable knob on the dedicated UA Bock 167 power supply: fully counterclockwise for omni, straight up for cardioid and fully clockwise for figure-8. Each power supply is adjusted at the factory for the microphone it ships with. The mic connects to it with the included six-pin XLR cable and does not need phantom power.
