Description
The Royer YC-18 is the splitter cable from the cable sets that ship with Royer's SF-12 and SF-24 stereo ribbon microphones. It takes the 5-pin XLR end of the 5-conductor extension cable and splits it into two 3-pin male XLR connectors, one for each ribbon element, marked Upper and Lower. Royer sells it on its own as a replacement splitter.
How the Cable Set Connects
The SF-12 and SF-24 each have a 5-pin XLR output that carries both channels. A 5-conductor extension cable runs from the mic to the YC-18 (18 ft with the SF-12, 25 ft with the SF-24), and the YC-18 feeds two standard mic inputs on your preamp. For longer runs, Royer's EXC50 and EXC100 extension cables go between the mic and the splitter. The SF-24 manual warns against substituting extension cables of unknown wiring.
Upper and Lower
The two ribbons in an SF-12 or SF-24 sit one above the other, which is where the Upper and Lower labels come from. With the mic upright and the Royer logo facing the source, Upper is the right channel and Lower is the left, heard from behind the mic. When the mic hangs upside down, swap the two at the preamp.
