Description
The Royer SF-2 Matched Pair is two SF-2 phantom-powered ribbon microphones supplied by Royer Labs as a matched set for stereo work on choirs, orchestras, string sections, piano and drum overheads. Each mic's active electronics bring its output to -38 dB, on par with a phantom-powered condenser, with self-noise under 18 dB, so the pair runs on ordinary mic preamps. The 1.8-micron aluminum ribbons give fast transient response and a figure-8 pattern with equal pickup from front and back.
Active Electronics
Each SF-2 has a fully balanced, discrete head amplifier with a specially wound toroidal transformer and low-noise FETs. The transformer supplies an extra 14 dB of gain and the circuit runs below unity, so the higher output adds no noise. The electronics give each ribbon the correct load whatever preamp follows, and the low output impedance handles very long cable runs.
Sound
The magnet and pole-piece structure gives a wide, even frequency response with no large peaks or dips. Response holds up whatever the angle of the sound reaching the ribbon, so off-axis coloration is negligible, and it stays consistent at any distance from the source.
