Description
The Royer SF-24V is a vacuum tube stereo ribbon microphone and the top model in Royer's SF series. Two matched ribbon mics sit one above the other in a Blumlein pair, each aimed 45 degrees from center, so one mic records true stereo in Blumlein or mid-side. It uses the same tube electronics as Royer's R-122V, which add midrange reach, clarity, detail and air, with -38 dB output for any professional preamp and self-noise under 18 dB.
Tube Electronics
Each channel runs a low-noise, military-grade 5840 tube wired as a triode cathode follower, which lets the mic drive long cable runs without losing high frequencies. Jensen output transformers isolate the balanced outputs to keep induced noise out, and a dedicated power supply feeds the tubes with ample current. The circuit gives each ribbon the correct load whatever preamp follows and protects the ribbons from phantom power, electrical glitches and miswired cables.
Stereo and Mono
The microphone connects to its power supply over a 7-pin cable, and the supply delivers the two channels on 3-pin XLR outputs. The two sides stay in phase when summed to mono, and each side works on its own as a mono figure-8 mic. Royer recommends the SF-24V for full orchestra, choirs and ensembles, classical piano, drum overheads, percussion and acoustic instruments.
