Description
The Royer SF-24 is a phantom-powered stereo ribbon microphone, the active version of Royer's SF-12. Like the SF-12, it holds two matched ribbon mics one above the other, each aimed 45 degrees from center in a Blumlein pair, so one mic records true stereo in Blumlein or mid-side. Its active electronics raise the output to -38 dB, 14 dB more than the SF-12 and on par with a phantom-powered condenser, while self-noise stays under 18 dB.
Active Electronics
Each side has its own fully balanced, discrete head amplifier with a specially wound toroidal transformer and low-noise FETs, so the SF-24 works with any preamp of average gain. The extra level comes from the transformers and the circuit runs below unity, so it adds no noise. The electronics give each ribbon the correct load whatever preamp follows, allow very long cable runs, and protect the ribbons from phantom power, electrical glitches and miswired cables.
Stereo and Mono
The supplied extension cable ends in a splitter with two 3-pin XLR connectors marked Upper and Lower, one for each ribbon. The two sides stay in phase when summed to mono, and either side works on its own as a mono figure-8 mic. The SF-24 suits classical piano, drum overheads, orchestras and ensembles, percussion, acoustic instruments, vocal groups and choirs.
