Description
The Royer SF-2 is a phantom-powered mono ribbon microphone designed for classical recording and acoustic instruments, from choir and strings to woodwinds, piano, harp and acoustic guitar. It is the active version of Royer's SF-1. Built-in electronics raise its output to -38 dB, on par with a phantom-powered condenser, so it works with almost any mic preamp, and self-noise stays under 18 dB. Its 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon gives fast transient response and a figure-8 pattern with equal pickup from front and back.
Active Electronics
A fully balanced, discrete head amplifier with a specially wound toroidal transformer and low-noise FETs drives the output. The transformer supplies an extra 14 dB of gain and the circuit runs below unity, so the higher output adds no noise. The electronics also give the ribbon the correct load whatever preamp follows, so the mic keeps its low end and body on any input, and the low output impedance handles very long cable runs. Phantom power, electrical glitches and miswired cables cannot damage the ribbon.
Sound
The magnet and pole-piece structure gives a wide, even frequency response with no large peaks or dips. Response holds up whatever the angle of the sound reaching the ribbon, so off-axis coloration is negligible. Before release, prototype SF-2s spent years in major studios and scoring stages on choir, piano, woodwinds and strings.
