Description
The Royer SF-12 is a stereo coincident ribbon microphone: two matched ribbon mics in one body, one above the other, each aimed 45 degrees from center in the classic Blumlein arrangement. A single SF-12 records true stereo, in Blumlein or mid-side, with strong separation and imaging, which suits orchestra, choir, piano, harp and drum overheads. It is a passive design with no electronics inside, so nothing in the mic can overload or distort below its maximum SPL.
Design
Each side uses a 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon weighing about 1/3 milligram, set in a magnet and pole-piece structure that gives wide, even response with no large peaks or dips. The ingot iron case forms part of the magnetic circuit, which keeps magnetic leakage low and sensitivity high for such a slim mic. The supplied extension cable ends in a splitter with two 3-pin XLR connectors marked Upper and Lower, one for each ribbon.
Stereo and Mono
The two sides stay in phase when summed to mono, which helps with a wide source or a singer who moves off a mono mic's sweet spot. Either side also works on its own as a mono figure-8 microphone. Ribbons add almost no distortion of their own, so they take EQ well, and a top-end boost on drum overheads brings up cymbal air without harshness.
