Description
The Royer RSM-SS1 Sling-Shock is a suspension shock mount sized for Royer's 1-inch ribbon microphones: the R-121, R-122 MKII, R-122V and SF-12. It also fits any cylindrical microphone about 1 inch in diameter, give or take 1/8 inch. Non-resonant nylon cord and damped steel springs do the work that rubber bands and elastic do in other mounts, so there are no rubber parts to degrade or stretch and the mount needs almost no maintenance.
Isolation
Vibration from the floor and the mic stand reaches a microphone as rumble and low-level noise across the whole frequency range, and the Sling-Shock's patented suspension greatly reduces it. The mount also has no self-resonance, which conventional mounts can add on loud close-miked sources such as electric guitar cabinets. A cable clip on the mount holds a loop of mic cable under the microphone, so vibration does not travel up the cable.
Holding the Microphone
The mic sits in a felt-lined chamber, and a knurled lock-down knob holds it without marking the finish. The clutch allows fine position adjustments once the mic is mounted. Each Sling-Shock is handcrafted in Burbank, California from aircraft-grade aluminum, with a powder-coated finish and a solid brass base for long thread life.
