Description
The Royer R-12 Matched Pair is two R-12 active figure-8 ribbon microphones, supplied by Royer Labs as a matched set for stereo recording. Each mic uses the 2.5-micron aluminum ribbon from the R-121 and runs on 48 V phantom power, with output comparable to a studio condenser. Switchable -15 dB pads and 100 Hz high-pass filters let the pair handle loud drum overheads and guitar amps as well as quiet acoustic sources.
Stereo Setups
Two figure-8 mics give you a Blumlein pair crossed at 90 degrees, or a mid-side array, where recording mid and side on separate tracks lets you set the stereo width at mixdown. Royer's manual also suggests a spaced pair over the bass and treble strings of a piano, an X-Y pair just outside the open lid, and a pair 4 to 6 feet above a drum kit. The low output impedance of the active electronics suits long cable runs on live stages.
