Description
The Royer R-12 is an active figure-8 ribbon microphone for studio recording and live sound. It uses the 2.5-micron aluminum ribbon from Royer's R-121, and its phantom-powered electronics raise the output to a level comparable to a studio condenser, so quiet acoustic instruments and vocals reach any phantom-powered preamp at a healthy level. A -15 dB pad and a 100 Hz high-pass filter let the same mic take on loud drums, cranked guitar amps and close vocals.
Pad, Filter and Protection
The pad sits ahead of the electronics, giving the mic 15 dB more headroom for high-SPL sources. The high-pass filter rolls off at 6 dB per octave from 100 Hz to control proximity bass on close vocals and speaker cabinets. Inside, the active circuit gives the ribbon a consistent load, and a three-layer windscreen and an internal shock mount protect the ribbon from plosives and handling noise.
