Description
This Royer Labs bundle puts the R-10 passive ribbon microphone together with the dBooster (R-DB20) in-line signal booster. On its own, the R-10 handles more than 160 dB SPL for guitar cabinets, brass and drums. With the dBooster between the mic and the preamp, it gains 12 dB or 20 dB of clean level, which gives acoustic guitars, ukuleles, vocals and other quiet sources enough signal and leaves more headroom at the preamp.
The R-10
The R-10 uses the same 2.5-micron aluminum ribbon as Royer's R-121, behind a three-layer windscreen and an internally shock-mounted transducer. Its patented offset-ribbon design takes loud sources on the front (logo) side and gives a brighter sound on the back side for quieter sources at 3 feet or closer. It is hand-built in Burbank, California.
The dBooster
The dBooster runs on 48 V phantom power and has a Class A input with high input impedance, so it loads the ribbon lightly and adds very little distortion or coloration. An internal regulated supply isolates the mic electrically and protects the ribbon from phantom power. The low-impedance balanced output can drive an audio interface directly and handles long cable runs, mic splitters and vintage-style preamps.
