Description
The Modal Electronics Skulpt SE (SKULPTsynth SE) is a portable 4-voice virtual analog synthesizer with 32 oscillators, a 16-key touch keyboard and a removable protective hood. It runs on USB power or six AA batteries and weighs 0.62 kg, so it can come along to a jam, a studio session or a gig. A 256-note real-time sequencer, an arpeggiator and MPE support handle performance, and the free MODALapp editor opens every parameter on a computer, tablet or phone, or inside your DAW as a plugin.
Sound Engine
Each voice has eight oscillators in two WAVE groups. WAVE 1 sweeps from sine through triangle, saw and square to PWM, and WAVE 2 from sine through triangle, saw and square to noise. FM, ring modulation and unison spread add movement and width. A 2-pole state-variable filter with resonance morphs from low pass through band pass to high pass, three envelopes shape the filter, amplitude and modulation, and two audio-rate LFOs, one global and one polyphonic, sync to internal or external tempo.
Sequencer and Connections
The real-time sequencer records up to 256 notes with four lanes of parameter animation, and it can quantize, loop and hold what you play. The arpeggiator, chord mode and transpose sit beside it, and built-in distortion and a tempo-synced delay finish the sound. Full-size MIDI In and Out and 3.5 mm clock sync connect it to other gear. Up to four SKULPT synths, SE or original, poly-chain for 16 voices and 128 oscillators, and patches load on either model.
