Description
The Blackstar JJN 50 is a 50-watt tube head designed with Jared James Nichols, his second signature amp with Blackstar. Channel I is voiced after mid-1960s American cleans, bright with a solid low end, and makes a steady platform for pedals. Channel II follows an early-1960s British Class A preamp for clean to crunch tones, and its footswitchable BLUES POWER setting adds a 10 dB clean boost at the input to push it into overdrive. Two ECC83 preamp tubes and two EL34 power tubes drive it, and the head weighs 7.7 kg.
Built on the St. James Platform
The JJN 50 starts from the St. James 50 EL34 and extends the top end for a brighter tone that cuts through a mix. Its lightweight switched-mode power transformer runs on any mains supply from 100 to 240 V. A three-way switch selects full 50 W, a Sag mode that softens the attack with power supply compression, or 2 W for practice and recording. Each channel has its own EQ circuit behind the shared Bass, Middle and Treble knobs, and the Middle control works as an active cut and boost.
Silent Recording
A built-in reactive load lets the head run with no speaker connected. With the Standby switch at 0, the speaker outputs disconnect while the full signal, power tubes included, still reaches CabRig, Blackstar's IR-based speaker simulator. CabRig feeds the balanced XLR D.I. output, the stereo headphone and line output and the USB audio output, and it comes loaded with three presets made with Jared: JJN Classic Muscle, JJN Modern Grit and JJN Nashville Basement.
