Wireless Systems: What to Know

Wireless systems free performers, presenters, and engineers from cable runs. Vocalists move across stage without tripping over XLR. Guitarists roam the venue. In-ear monitor systems replace floor wedges for cleaner stage sound and better mix control. These systems operate in UHF frequency bands, and in Canada, you need to verify your frequencies are legal and clear of interference from TV broadcasts and other local RF sources. Digital systems offer more channels in tighter bandwidth and better resistance to dropouts. Analog systems are simpler and often cheaper but require more careful frequency coordination in multi-system setups.

What to Look For

Start with frequency range. UHF systems in the 470-608 MHz range are standard, but check Canadian frequency regulations and local TV station usage in your area before buying. Digital systems like Shure ULXD or Sennheiser EW-D pack more channels into less spectrum and handle interference better than analog. For live sound, you want true diversity receivers with two antennas to minimize dropouts when the performer moves. Battery life matters: rechargeable systems save money long-term, but you need spares. For in-ear monitors, consider how many mixes you need to send, stereo systems let you pan instruments left and right for better clarity. RF Venue antennas and distribution systems become essential once you're running four or more wireless units simultaneously. Intermodulation calculators help you pick compatible frequencies when coordinating multiple systems.

Top Brands

Shure dominates with systems from entry-level BLX to flagship Axient Digital. Sennheiser's evolution wireless and Digital 6000 series are touring standards. Audio-Technica offers solid mid-range options with their 3000 and 5000 series. Electro-Voice and Audix cover budget to mid-tier vocal systems.
