Truss: What to Know
Truss systems are aluminum frameworks used to mount lighting, speakers, video screens, and DJ booths at events, clubs, and permanent installations. DJs and mobile entertainers use truss to elevate gear above the crowd and create a professional stage presence. Production companies rely on it for rigging heavy PA systems and lighting rigs safely. Truss comes in segments you connect with couplers and pins, plus corner pieces to build squares, triangles, or custom shapes. The most common profiles are triangular and square, rated by load capacity. You're building a structure that holds expensive gear over people's heads, so understanding weight ratings and proper assembly isn't optional.
What to Look For
Load capacity is the first spec to check. Truss is rated for distributed loads and point loads, measured in kilograms. A 290mm square truss segment might handle 200kg distributed but only 50kg at a single point. Know your total gear weight and add a safety margin. Segment length matters for span and portability: 0.5m, 1m, 2m, and 3m are standard. Longer segments mean fewer connections but harder transport. Connection type is usually conical or spigot. Conical couplers are faster to assemble but spigot connections are more precise for complex builds. Aluminum grade affects strength and weight. Look for 6082-T6 alloy in professional-grade truss. Corner blocks, base plates, and clamps are sold separately. Budget for those plus a crank stand or winch if you're lifting the truss. Black powder coat hides better under stage lighting than raw aluminum.
