Electric Guitars: What to Know

Electric guitars convert string vibrations into electrical signals through magnetic pickups, then send that signal to an amplifier. Solid-body designs offer maximum sustain and feedback resistance. Semi-hollow and hollow-body guitars add acoustic resonance and warmth, favored in jazz and blues. Your choice depends on genre, playing style, and the tonal character you need. Single-coil pickups deliver bright, articulate tone. Humbuckers cancel noise and push harder into overdrive. Neck profiles, scale length, and fretboard radius all affect playability. These aren't details to ignore.

What to Look For

Pickup configuration matters. Single-coils give you Strat snap and Tele twang. Humbuckers deliver thick, compressed drive for rock and metal. P-90s split the difference with midrange punch. Scale length affects string tension and tone: 25.5" feels tighter and brighter, 24.75" bends easier with warmer mids. Neck profile ranges from slim C-shapes to chunky vintage D-profiles. Check fretboard radius: flatter boards (12"-16") suit fast playing and bends, rounder boards (7.25"-9.5") feel vintage and comfortable for chording. Bridge type determines tuning stability and sustain. Fixed bridges stay in tune. Tremolos add vibrato but require setup attention. Fret size changes how notes respond under your fingers. Jumbo frets make bending effortless. Vintage frets demand precision.
