About Steven Slate Drums
Steven Slate Drums launched in Los Angeles in 2006 with a guerrilla marketing campaign: founder Steven Slate burned roughly 100 CD-Rs of drum samples and handed them out to producers and engineers at Grammy parties. The first commercial release, Steven Slate Drums Pro, arrived in December that year. The brand became synonymous with the punchy, sample-replaced drum sound on mainstream rock and metal records through the late 2000s and 2010s. SSD's signature is multi-velocity sampling captured in professional rooms, paired with TRIGGER, a phase-aligned drum replacement plugin that layers samples without phase cancellation. The company has released expansion packs recorded with engineers like Chris Lord-Alge, Terry Date, and David Bendeth, cementing its place in modern rock production.
Steven Slate Drums 5.5
SSD5 is the flagship sampler, offering a library of acoustic drum kits recorded in world-class studios. Each kit includes multiple velocity layers, round-robin samples, and articulations for realistic performance. The interface lets you mix individual drum channels, swap out individual drums, and load presets dialed in by name engineers. The Blackbird, CLA, David Bendeth, and Terry Date expansions add signature kits and mix chains from those producers' sessions. SSD5 runs as a standalone instrument or plugin, making it a complete drum production environment for rock, metal, pop, and hip-hop.
TRIGGER 2
TRIGGER 2 is a drum replacement and reinforcement plugin that reads audio tracks and triggers samples in real time. It uses phase-aligned layering, so you can blend multiple samples without comb filtering. The plugin ships with a core sample library; Platinum and Deluxe editions expand the palette with more kits and articulations. TRIGGER 2 works on live recordings, programmed MIDI, or hybrid workflows where you want to augment a recorded kit with sampled punch. The free Trigger Instrument Editor lets you build custom sample instruments from your own libraries. Expansion packs mirror the SSD5 lineup: Blackbird, CLA, David Bendeth, Terry Date, and Patrick Carney.
