The Roland TR-8S is an 11-track rhythm performer that combines ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) models of the TR-808, TR-909, TR-606, TR-707, and TR-727 with FM synthesis, a 300+ preset sample library, and user sample import via SD card. It features a hands-on performance interface with dedicated faders, knobs, and a velocity-sensitive pad, six assignable analog outputs, a stereo external input with side-chain, and 24-bit/96 kHz audio output.

Sound Engine & Performance Routing

Each of the 11 instrument parts can be assigned any tone freely, pulling from 11 ACB bass drums, 8 snares, 15 toms, 3 rim shots, 5 hand claps, 8 hi-hats, 8 cymbals, 23 percussion sounds, 72 FM tones, or 300+ preset samples. User samples (WAV/AIFF) load via SD card with approximately 600 seconds of total sample time and 180 seconds maximum per file. Per-instrument effects (13 types), reverb (7 types), delay (4 types including pitch shift), and master effects (21 types) provide extensive sound shaping without external processing.

The step sequencer offers 16 steps per variation with 8 variations and 2 fill-ins per pattern across 128 user patterns. Sub-steps enable detailed rolls, and the Auto Fill-In function includes a Scatter effect for glitch-style transitions. A velocity-sensitive performance pad allows real-time recording with dynamics. Six assignable 1/4" outputs (switchable to trigger mode) route individual instruments to external mixers or effects, while a dedicated 3.5mm trigger output drives modular gear. The stereo external input features a side-chain compressor synced to the sequencer for ducking pads or synths.
