Microphone Stands & Arms: What to Know

Microphone stands and boom arms hold your mics in position for recording, streaming, podcasting, and live performance. The right stand depends on your application: desktop boom arms for broadcast and streaming, tripod bases for vocal recording, low-profile stands for kick drums and guitar amps, overhead booms for orchestral recording. Build quality matters. Cheap stands drift during long sessions, strip their threads, and tip over. Good stands lock tight, adjust smoothly, and last years. Most studios and venues need several types: a desktop arm for the main vocal mic, tripod stands for instruments, and at least one tall boom for overhead placement.

What to Look For

Base stability comes first. Tripod bases work on uneven floors and pack flat for transport. Round bases stay compact but need level ground. Weighted bases don't fold, but they won't tip with a heavy mic and shock mount. Boom length determines reach: short booms (18-24 inches) suit tight spaces, long booms (30+ inches) let you position mics over drum kits or piano lids without the base getting in the way. Adjustment mechanisms vary. Clutch-style locks adjust quickly but can slip under heavy loads. Threaded knobs hold position reliably but take longer to reposition. Desktop arms need internal cable routing and enough spring tension to support your mic and shock mount without sagging. Check maximum load specs. A stand rated for 2 kg won't reliably hold a large-diaphragm condenser in a heavy shock mount. Thread size matters for compatibility: most mics use 5/8"-27 threads, some European mics use 3/8"-16, and good stands include an adapter.
