modal-electronics-skulpt-se
Modal Electronics Skulpt SE Desktop Synthesizer

The Modal Electronics Skulpt SE (SKULPTsynth SE) is a portable 4-voice virtual analog synthesizer with 32 oscillators, a 16-key touch keyboard and a removable protective hood. It runs on USB power or six AA batteries and weighs 0.62 kg, so it can come along to a jam, a studio session or a gig. A 256-note real-time sequencer, an arpeggiator and MPE support handle performance, and the free MODALapp editor opens every parameter on a computer, tablet or phone, or inside your DAW as a plugin.

Sound Engine

Each voice has eight oscillators in two WAVE groups. WAVE 1 sweeps from sine through triangle, saw and square to PWM, and WAVE 2 from sine through triangle, saw and square to noise. FM, ring modulation and unison spread add movement and width. A 2-pole state-variable filter with resonance morphs from low pass through band pass to high pass, three envelopes shape the filter, amplitude and modulation, and two audio-rate LFOs, one global and one polyphonic, sync to internal or external tempo.

Sequencer and Connections

The real-time sequencer records up to 256 notes with four lanes of parameter animation, and it can quantize, loop and hold what you play. The arpeggiator, chord mode and transpose sit beside it, and built-in distortion and a tempo-synced delay finish the sound. Full-size MIDI In and Out and 3.5 mm clock sync connect it to other gear. Up to four SKULPT synths, SE or original, poly-chain for 16 voices and 128 oscillators, and patches load on either model.

Features

4-voice polyphony with 32 oscillators, eight per voice in two WAVE groups

Morphing waveforms: sine, triangle, saw, square and PWM on WAVE 1; sine, triangle, saw, square and noise on WAVE 2

FM, ring modulation, PWM and tuning controls, with a mixer for the two WAVE groups

Unison and spread to detune the 32 oscillators

Morphing 2-pole resonant filter from low pass through band pass to high pass

3 envelopes and 2 audio-rate LFOs, one global and one polyphonic

8-slot modulation matrix with 8 sources and 37 destinations

256-note real-time sequencer with 4 animation lanes

Arpeggiator with division, direction, octave, bipolar swing, latch and sustain

Distortion and a delay with modulation and tempo sync

Mono, duophonic and polyphonic play modes

MPE support for compatible MIDI controllers

Poly-chain up to 4 SKULPT synths for 16 voices

Free MODALapp editor for macOS, Windows, iOS, iPadOS and Android, plus AU and VST3 plugin

Runs on USB power or 6 AA batteries

Specifications

Polyphony: 4 voices

Oscillators: 32, eight per voice in two WAVE groups

Filter: 2-pole state-variable with resonance, morphing low pass, band pass and high pass

Modulation: 3 envelopes, 2 audio-rate LFOs, 8-slot matrix with 8 sources and 37 destinations

Sequencer: Real-time, up to 256 notes with 4 animation lanes

Effects: Waveshaping distortion, delay with modulation and tempo sync

Memory: 128 patches, 64 sequences

Keyboard: 16-key touch keyboard

Controls: 14 endless encoders, 13 buttons

Play modes: Mono, duophonic, polyphonic

Audio outputs: 3.5 mm TRS dual-mono line output, 3.5 mm TRS headphone output

MIDI and sync: 5-pin MIDI In and Out, class-compliant USB MIDI over micro USB, 3.5 mm analog clock sync in and out

Power: Micro USB or 6 AA batteries (batteries not included)

Enclosure: Hard plastic with removable protective hood

Dimensions: 255 x 135 x 68 mm (10 x 5.5 x 3 in)

Weight: 0.62 kg (1.36 lb) without batteries

Editor: Free MODALapp for macOS, Windows, iOS, iPadOS and Android, plus AU and VST3 plugin

Warranty: 12 months from Modal, from the date of purchase

In the Box

Modal Electronics SKULPTsynth SE

Micro USB cable
