While some may invoke the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra, who says you can’t go ahead and make it better? Well, nobody at Boz Digital, which is why ProVocative was created. Quick and easy to dial in, its high- and low-pass filters, width control, and wet/dry knobs let you add thickness or bring out the air in vocals without sounding robotic; subtly or aggressively widen guitars, synth pads, or drums; and mix wet and dry signal to taste. It’s light on the CPU and heavy on sound quality.

ProVocative—Cracking the Code

ProVocative is an inspired new version of the legendary micro pitch-shifter of days gone by (A hint to its identity lies within a joke we’ve heard at least, Hmm, 3000 times: Child, you so ugly, Even the tide wouldn’t take you out). While the hardware became ubiquitous in high-end and mid-level studios the world over, it was quite complicated to use. As a result, two go-to presets emerged; 231, which became to go-to for vocal thickening, and 521, which combined micro pitch-shifting with slap delay, the standard for depth and widening. All but the most adventurous tweakers kept that ‘big bucks box’ dedicated to those effects (because who has time to read manuals and futz around while the clock is ticking). In the studio, you want great results and you need them quickly, which is what ProVocative is all about.

Mixer Section

With other pitch-shifting plug-ins, the ability to run the effect in parallel with the dry signal for a more controlled, natural sound, ProVocative generously gives you individual Wet and Dry knobs so you can use it as an insert effect and dial in the amount of effect you want in one convenient location. However, if you prefer the functionality of a blend knob, you can engage the Link button, which gangs the Wet and Dry knobs together to act like a wet/dry mix control.

Filter Section

ProVocative’s most unique addition to traditional pitch-shifting is its high- and low-pass filter section, which enables you to select the frequency range it applies micro-shifting to via slider. You can bypass or enable these filters by clicking on the HPF or LPF symbols. These filters will only EQ the wet sound, leaving the dry sound unaffected. The main benefit of the filter section is that it enables to thicken or widen a specific frequency range while retaining an overall more natural sound—unless you want to go full robotic.

Width

As its name suggests, width controls widening of the pitch-shifted tracks. When set to positive 100%, the pitch-shifted track is panned to the right, while negative 100% pans the track to the left. When set to 0%, both tracks are panned to the center.

Pitch

The pitch control ranges from 1 to 20 cents. Once set, ProVocative makes two pitch-shifted tracks, one up and one down by the selected amount.

Delay

To create depth, this knob controls the delay between dry and pitch-shifted tracks. It ranges from 20ms to 150ms. Note: Some slight modulationis applied to the delay time in addition to the delay time set. This helps to give a more natural sound.

Like all Boz plug-ins, ProVocative comes with its own presets, shareable across formats, computers, and operating systems, along with an A/B bank that lets you compare settings without losing your settings.

Pan Knob overcomes the limitations of traditional panning schemes with a superior algorithm that centers low frequencies while panning higher frequencies for superior balance and mix translation.

Panning is one of the most basic mixing tools we have, and it’s included in every DAW. Because in the real world, sound never shows up in just one ear, unless it’s a mosquito.

Pan Knob fixes this by adding a couple extra dimensions to your pan control.

It keeps low frequencies unpanned. Pan Knob enables you to experiment with panning without all the tail-chasing and tradeoffs that come with moving instruments and vocals around the stereo field using traditional panners. We sampled two pianos of the same model, but built in different eras. One was built in 1926, the other in 1991. NYL 1926 has an extremely resonant character that only age can provide, while NYL 1991 retains the pristine, clean sound that the manufacturer is known for.

Size Matters

Most pianos that we hear in our favorite albums weren’t recorded in a concert hall on a 9 foot grand piano. They were recorded in on shorter, less perfect pianos in smaller rooms. As much as we love the sound of massive pianos, it’s not always the right sound for a recording. Sometimes you need something more intimate. Something with a bit more character.

The Model L is not your typical 9 foot concert grand piano. It sits just under 6 feet long, giving it that shorter piano sound without being so short that the strings sound tubby and lifeless (although that can be a fun sound too). It has that characteristic “real” sound that you are used to hearing on your favorite records.

Choices

Both pianos were sampled from multiple microphone perspectives to give you all the choices you need without being overwhelmed with options. From the attack of the stick to the resonance of the head, these short time slices add together to create what we hear as the tone. This is why it’s such a shame that the standard is to rely on static EQ to sculpt the tone of our drums. While the GUI of Imperial Delay is simple and straightforward, it offers far more creative options than its streamlined front panel suggests. Since Imperial Delay can function as both a delay and multi-effects processor, it’s designed to draw minimal CPU power, which enables multiple instances—something that will come in very handy if you want to dedicate its various capabilities to specific applications such as a lead vocal delay, stereo widening effects, modulation and color, and detune and chorus effects. You can also use it as a distortion generator, or throw caution to the wind and create effects previously unheard by human ears.

Main view

The Delay knob is where the royal edicts of Imperial Delay are carried out. There is also independent L-C-R channel activation with a mode display. Once set, the offset maintains at the same ratio regardless of the main delay setting. For example, with the delay knob set at 344ms with a 10ms offset (354ms right), if you change the main delay setting to 244ms, the right channel will be 254ms, maintaining the 10ms offset.

Go Deep

While the main control display is easily discernable to those who prefer to forge ahead without reading manuals, there are some hidden gems in the advanced settings windows, which appear at the selection of button labeled “e.” Advanced settings are available for Drive, Feedback, Modulation, Smear, Color, Chorus, and Duck. When the edit button is selected, the relevant controls appear along with a presets button that gives you an idea of the possibilities the advanced section can give you, along with the ability to save your custom presets in submenus. Once you hear what Manic Compressor can do, you’ll wonder how you lived without it. Plus, it will be hard to resist the temptation to revisit old mixes with a renewed enthusiasm.

Parallel-O-Grammys

Manic Compressor is built for parallel compression right from the drawing board. It comprises six unique compressor models, each optimized for the response you want from bus compression, plus separate faders for compressed, uncompressed, and master levels—offering true parallel compression in a single plug-in. However, if you want subtle compression with natural sound, you can combine the Wet and Dry faders to function like a mix knob.

The Power of Six

With Manic Compressor, you can switch between its six compressors instantly without any change in settings, so you can hear the tonal effect and impact of each in action without losing perspective. Plus, since compression is treated more and more as a creative effect, Manic Compressor is built for abuse, enabling you to go to extremes and achieve unique, musically useful sounds that go beyond the limits (so to speak) of mere level control. One such effect is the Tone EQ in a parallel compression setup.

Built-in Tone and Sidechain EQ

In standard parallel compression schemes, EQ is used to boost or cut various frequencies for pre- or post-compression effects. Ahead of the compressor, EQ can tame sounds going into the compressor, such as cymbals from being too harsh, or, it can prevent low frequencies from pulling down the mix. Used after the compressor, EQ can emphasize lost frequencies or tame those that the compressor over-emphasizes. This involves a lot of extra steps, even in software. Either way, this approach is more utilitarian than creative.

Manic Compressor gives you both practical and creative EQing. It hosts two EQ sections, both with their own preset manager, for the “all-in-one” functionality you’ve come to expect from Boz Digital. The Sidechain EQ, which is not audible, affects the signal going into the detector, determining how it reacts to program material by emphasizing or de-emphasizing selected frequencies. Additionally, the Sidechain input, selectable between internal and external sources, can be monitored in isolation for tweaking purposes.

The second EQ section is the Tone EQ, which does affect the audio output and gives you creative license to go wild if you want to. This EQ is designed to give you control over the frequency bands mainly associated with parallel compression. However, it’s not simply for low- and high-end boost. It follows its own set of rules. You can use extreme settings and blend them in with the dry signal for some truly unique sounds, unattainable by standard compressors and EQs.

Bringing Transients into Sharp Relief

You know you have a great piece of kit when you can crank knobs all the way up and still get a good sound, or an unexpectedly great sound, which is what Manic Compressor is built for—so let’s make some mistakes—that’s what it’s all about. The last “mistake” that spawned a unique compression effect was the “all button mode,” which is so 50 years ago. Among Manic Compressor’s innovative features is its Loud Relief control, which lets you apply extreme amounts of compression while relaxing the compressor’s grip on loud transients for a more natural sound.

With Loud Relief, Manic Compressor lets you visit sonic mayhem on an unsuspecting populace, crushing tracks under your merciless boot heels, and then ease off with Loud Relief, which softens the compression artifacts even under super heavy load.

Combine our best analog emulations of gear from David Bendeth’s House of Loud studio. Gatey Watey is a forward-thinking, resource-friendly plug-in that not only eliminates the guesswork typical of complicated gates, but also the steep learning curve as well. Gatey Watey is how a gate should work, especially if you want to breeze through the tedious housekeeping processes of noise cleanup and track preparation and focus on creativity.

Gatey Watey—Cracking the Code

The reasons for using gates have never gone away: singing toms, too much metal-work on a drum kit, bleed in kick and snare that makes processing troublesome at best, and we haven’t even gotten to guitars. Gating is a key element for increasing dynamic range and bringing out the punch and focus of drums in a dense mix. And yes, gates come standard in all DAWs, but how often do you actually use them? And wouldn’t you prefer a gate that works without all the histrionics (and hysteresis)?

In order to increase appeal, gate plug-ins have some complicated and downright incomprehensible controls, yet they still operate on the same principle as analog gates from the days of yore (with names like Kepex). Some argue that gates are outdated technology in the face of powerful DAW editing. For example, there’s that clip gain trick used in place of gating, which requires you cut regions, say between tom fills, and reduce the gain of the clip by around -14dB to maintain a natural sound. If you don’t have an intern (studio slang for “slave”) to do it for you, you’ll want something that gets the tedium out of the way. The real question is whether you want to focus on mixing, or spend hours cutting spaces between every snare, kick, and tom hit? And what if you have cymbal or hi-hat bleed you want to get rid of? That’s near impossible to edit. Again, wouldn’t you rather have a gate that does all that for you in a fraction of the time? Of course you would.

Transient ischemic attack

Even gate plug-ins, as fast as they are, have the same problem with transients as their analog ancestors. One clever workaround in DAWs is to copy the track you wish to add gating to, offset it slightly ahead of the track to be processed, and send a sidechain signal from the offset track to the gated track. The offset track opens the gate slightly ahead of the gated track so that transients will pass unmolested. Clever, yes? Well, not really when Gatey Watey will do that for you with its look-ahead feature.

Boz Fun Fact: In the days of recording to tape, gates were used on drums as part of the tracking process. It took a bit of expertise to set the hold and release functions to have the gate close smoothly, but transients were another problem altogether. Since audio signal crossing a threshold opened the gate, a certain amount of transient information was lost, which was further exacerbated by analog tape’s tendency to soften transients. To preserve as much of the attack as possible, some devilishly clever engineers came up with an analog look-ahead scheme, which involved placing two microphones on each drum; one mic close to the drum that opened a gate key input (which wasn’t heard), and a second mic farther back to capture the sound of the drum. The few-millisecond delay of the transients hitting the second mic after the first one opened the gate allowed the transients to be captured entirely.

Chatter below decks

Another issue that comes with setting a gate is known as gate chatter, which occurs when audio signal fluctuates above and below the threshold at the tail end of its decay. The gate opens and closes rapidly, causing a stuttering effect. Standard gates have a hysteresis control to deal with that. Yet another parameter that has to be tweaked to sound natural, hysteresis keeps the gate open by a fixed amount below the threshold, allowing the sound to die out without shutting the gate. You’ll find this control on SSL and Neve consoles, but not on Gatey Watey. Due to its operating principle, gate chatter is simply not an issue.

Gatey Watey controls

Gatey Watey has three mode buttons: high-pass, low pass, and normal gate operation (should you need it). Below these buttons is a frequency slider ranging from 20Hz to 12kHz, which lights red and blue above and below the slider position (and depending on which mode you select). Below the frequency slider are Range, which determines how many dB the gate will attenuate; Attack, which sets how quickly the gate will respond (0ms – 200ms); Release, which determines how fast or slow the gate will close (25ms – 500ms), and Lookahead, which ranges from 0ms to 50ms. The Threshold slider on Gatey Watey’s left side also lights red and blue coinciding with the frequency slider and mode so you can see what’s happening graphically. And finally, a bypass button lives on the right side of the GUI.

Why Gatey Watey when there are so many gates—even ones for free?

As we briefly touched on in the beginning, Gatey Watey has one feature that sets it apart and makes it a must-have for anyone who has struggled with gating: frequency-selective attenuation. To put it simply, when the input drops below the threshold Gatey Watey will attenuate only the high frequencies or only the low frequencies based on selected mode switch and your selected crossover point. That ability makes Gatey Watey extremely powerful when it comes to gating drums, electric guitars, or pretty much anything that requires a gate.

For example, if you want to cut the hi-hat bleed from a snare without killing the ring of the snare, better call Gatey Watey (sorry Saul, this is out of your league). Do you want your distorted guitars to ring out without electrical hum from fluorescent bulbs or neon lamps blaring through your pickups? Gatey Watey to the rescue. You can even use two instances of Gatey Watey if you’d like to gate specific high and low frequencies simultaneously. Even in normal gating situations, Gatey Watey excels. You just tell it what to turn down and how much to turn down and Gatey Watey takes it from there. On the other hand, if you get stuck in 1969 without a TARDIS, you’ll just have to wait it out until Boz invents Gatey Watey (and don’t point your timey-wimey detector at a chicken . . . it’s not pretty when they blow.)

The ultimate clap track machine packed with natural human feel.

Whether you need a crisp solo clap, stomp, or snap; a stadium full of energy, or anything in between, El Clapo delivers.
